New York on the go
The organisation ‘Big Apple Greeter’ offers visitors to New York a personal introduction to this fascinating city on the Hudson and a warm welcome. Accompanied by 20 of these Big Apple Greeters, Thomas Joussen and his team (including Frank Mesterharm and the three photographers Lindsey Brunsman, Marina Kloess and Darius Ramazani) set off to explore New York and were shown around their neighbourhoods.
In this unusual guidebook for visitors to New York, real New Yorkers present a wide variety of corners of their city through personal accounts and, in some cases, spectacular photographs. These include well-known attractions such as the Statue of Liberty, the Brooklyn Bridge, Times Square and Central Park, but the majority of the places featured are individual highlights off the beaten track. To do this, the visitor chooses the part of New York they want to explore and then meets ‘their’ New Yorker, who shows them around their neighbourhood on a three- to four-hour walk – spiced with plenty of personal anecdotes. It is not uncommon for the traveller to have made a new friend by the end.
New York to go is a book about the most fascinating city in the world, about a culture of hospitality in action, about countless encounters with locals, and about love: for New York and for countless people who were strangers just moments before.
The book was published on 28 June 2018 by Knesebeck-Verlag and is available wherever books are sold.
Oh, and by the way, New York to go has already won an award: the ITB Book Award 2019 in the ‘Travel Photo Book’ category. The awards are presented at the world’s largest travel trade fair, ITB, in cooperation with the German Publishers and Booksellers Association. Each year, an independent jury honours outstanding works of journalism in the field of travel and tourism.
